RadioHead vs. ColdPlay

Here is the issue up for discussion:

RadioHead versus ColdPlay.

Although I like both bands, I have to give Radiohead the edge because I think there music is much deeper and on a level all its own. I think Jeremy will agree. I did get a chance to see Coldplay in concert and they were spot on as far as musically and Chris Martin brings a great amount of energy to the stage. I have not been lucky enough to see Radiohead in concert but I am sure it would blow me away.

On a side note, Thom Yorke, the creative genius that he is released a solo album "eraser", great CD with some really incredible songs on it. Check out this Video of Thom going acoustic on his song the Clock. It will knock you out. Unbelievable talent.

As far as any band from the states getting to their level, maybe Death Cab for Cutie, but I think they still have a long way to go...

Viva La Vida, the one that was inspired by (I won't dare accuse them of ripping off) these two songs:

Ummm, what about Viva La Vida? No, maybe it's not on the same creativity level as Radiohead, but it's a new direction for Coldplay and isn't bad for a mainstream act. If Radiohead could come up with some sunnier lyrics, a few more pop hooks, and maybe add a little Beach Boys/Brian Wilson influence into their music, or at that very least were took themselves way less seriously, then we'd really be in business!

RADIOHEAD

I have listened to both Radiohead and Coldplay albums multiple times and I positively believe that Radiohead surpasses Coldplay. I began as a Coldplay fan after hearing their song "The Scientist" played on the radio. I never had the advantage to hear Radiohead on the radio and if I did I would surely have boughten their albums. Anyway I loved Coldplay and listened to their first two albums again and again. Their music I found catchy and beautiful. However, after discovering Radiohead a few years later I was disappointed with Coldplay. I felt that Coldplay had almost stolen their Parashutes album directly from Radiohead's OK Computer. I think that Radiohead does produce "ear candy." On each of their albums are beautiful gems of music: Let Down, Karma Police, Reckoner, Weird Fishes/Arpeggi, Nice Dream, Morning Bell, There There, etc. These songs I feel are so powerful to listen to again and again. Radiohead's talent surpasses Coldplay on many levels. Coldplay has yet to do something completely new and inventive. Radiohead is simply amazing.

Radiohead and Coldplay

Although Radiohead may be one of the most ambitious and groundbreaking rock acts of the past decade and a half, Coldplay's music is a hell of lot catchier, and often times a lot prettier too. Songs like Yellow, The Scientist, God Put a Smile On Your Face, In My Place, etc. are like pure ear candy to me. The closest Radiohead has ever come to writing that type of a song is High and Dry, which is my favorite Radiohead song. Love the jangly acoustic guitar.

And as far as American bands go, we've got a lot more good ones than just Death Cab. I would recommend Wilco, Modest Mouse, Rilo Kiley, Barenaked Ladies (actually Canadian), Phish, Flaming Lips, Neutral Milk Hotel, Brian Wilson, and Our Lady Peace (another Canadian act), among many others.

No doubt

Radiohead is like Michael Jordon, Coldplay is like Larry Bird.

Both players were great, but Michael Jordon reinvented basketball.

Coldplay is a literal Radiohead. Where Radiohead’s music can be uplifting in a very abstract and artsy way, Coldplay’s music/lyrics are more tangible, same as Death Cab.
