Depending on your politics you may or may not believe this next part: when you show up at a hospital and you don't have insurance the hospital will run extra tests in an effort to run up the bill. If you have insurance your insurance company would never approve of all the extra testing, and the hospital wouldn't get paid for it. To make it worse, the price for service an insurance company will pay is far less then what the hospital charges so the bill gets even higher.
